Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs)

What happened to this file?[edit]

At File:Brexpiprazole.svg, I recently reverted a older version. But the current image and several of the older versions seem to have gone blank. Previously, they weren't. Any idea what happened and how to fix it? (Or is it somehow just an issue with my browser, such as a caching problem?) Marbletan (talk) 13:52, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Marbletan I tried deleting and undeleting the file and it didn't help. Probably a server-side caching issue. Give it a few hours and it should fix itself, ping me if it doesn't. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 13:57, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mdaniels5757: I've waited a few days and it doesn't seem to have fixed itself. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help. Marbletan (talk) 12:41, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Marbletan: You can try asking at Commons:Village pump/Technical. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:28, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion. Asked here: Commons:Village_pump/Technical#What_happened_to_this_file?. Marbletan (talk) 19:04, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just confirming that this still looks broken. - Jmabel ! talk 15:01, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fixed. Probably the recent upgrade to librsvg 2.44.10 caused the trouble. Glrx (talk) 19:22, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Images at proj Gutenberg "Ancient and Modern Ships"[edit]

I'm interested in uploading images from project Gutenberg's Ancient and Modern Ships, in particular, figures 13 – 20 on pages 40ff].

On the one hand, the very beginning of "Ancient and Modern Ships" starts right out with "This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with almost no restrictions whatsoever", but a bit below that, there's a parenthetical stating, "This file was produced from images generously made available by The Internet Archive", so maybe it doesn't include the images, and we'd have to try to find them at IA instead? The licensing status of the images is unclear to me.

Finally, the full Gutenberg license is at the end of the work, and also at https://gutenberg.org/policy/license.html, where the strings image and figure do not appear anywhere within it.

Bottom line: can I upload the images? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:55, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Mathglot: It appears to be a reproduction of a 1906 work, with links added. The illustrations are credited on page xv: "The illustrations marked * are published by kind permission of the Committee of the Egypt Exploration Fund. Those marked † are taken from "The History of Merchant Shipping and Ancient Commerce," and were kindly lent by Messrs. Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd. Those marked ‡ are reproduced from "La Marine Française de 1792 à nos jours," by l'Amiral Paris." I'd make a strong guess that by now they are all in the public domain, but you will want to work out the status of those individual sources, all of them presumably publishing before 1906. Still, if some illustrator lived past 1953, they could still be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 03:02, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Public domain book published in 1906. In the context of the gutenberg copy, I suppose that "images made available by the IA" means that they worked from the digitized images of the pages of one of the copies available at the IA (not "images" as in only the "illustrations"). IA has a few different digitizations. Other websites also have copies. I think there's no problem getting the illustrations from any digitized copy you find to have the best quality. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:13, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, all. I'll keep this in mind, and see what's the best path, here. Mathglot (talk) 03:19, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading images with common description[edit]

Hello, I have some images of geometric tiling patterns that I wish to upload. There is some explanatory text common to each image, which I want to maintain in one place, with a link to this in each image description field, saying e.g. "For general information, see <link>". Where should I put this common explanatory text?

Also, is there any way for me to upload multiple images at once and have the "For general information, see <link>" text automatically put in each description field, without the need for me to go and add it manually to every image?

I hope it is clear what I am trying to achieve. Thanks for any help. Tai Ling (talk) 22:16, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Tai Ling: We don't usually do the "for general information, see <link>." Would it make sense to put these in a category and put the general information on the category? Failing that, possibly make a template for the common text.
  • I know there are ways to do mass uploads, but I never use them so I've got nothing. Someone else might be able to help you out on that front. What I do is use Special:Upload and just copy-paste identical text.
  • Can someone help this person out on the mass-upload front? - Jmabel ! talk 22:48, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel, @Tai Ling: What do you mean by "mass upload". The wizard can upload 150 (500) images in one go, and you can have repeated uses with the same preferences. However if you have really large numbers of files that you want to upload unsupervised, than you will need one of the upload tools that you can install locally on your computer. There are command line tools and tools with a GUI. Only you can know, what fits your needs best. If you habe the "common information" in a template: This will work with the wizard and every external tool. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I tried a test, and the "copy to all" feature of the upload wizard seems to be what I need. As far as the template is concerned, can anyone show me an existing template that does the same kind of thing that I want, so that I can copy this and just change the text content? Tai Ling (talk) 22:39, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Btw, it does not seem appropriate to put the common description against the category, as there could be other files in the category to which my precise explanation does not apply. Tai Ling (talk) 22:47, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • That last is fine. I was considering the case where they were all of one building, event, etc. or something else that would deserve a category of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • @Tai Ling: A template with no parameters is pretty trivial. You just create it in "Template" space (e.g. Template:Foo), write it as wikitext just like anywhere else, and include it on a file page by the syntax {{Foo}}. If that's still not clear, tell me here what you want the template to say and what you want it to be called. - Jmabel ! talk 23:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I created the template and it seems to be working fine, as required for what I want to do. Thanks for your help with this. Tai Ling (talk) 12:29, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't know what Release rights I should choose when the photo is mine, but the thing in the photo (the railing of the bridge) is not mine. (in my country, I am allowed to take pictures of it as part of free panorama)[edit]

Hi, I don't know what Release rights I should choose when the photo is mine, but the thing in the photo (the railing of the bridge) is not mine. (in my country, I am allowed to take pictures of it as part of free panorama)

Should I choose the answer: This file is my own work or This file is not my own work? If I choose the answer This file is not my own work, what should I write in source? (mine photography?) And what should I write in author? (indicate the author of the photo or the author of the thing in the photo?)

I did not understand the help and instructions. I would very much like a definite verbal answer, please. Thank you.

btw. These are the laws of my country:

Czech Republic

The photographical reproduction of the depicted work is covered under the article §33 of the Czech Copyright Act, which states:
(1) Copyright is not infringed by anybody who records or expresses by drawing, painting, graphic art, photography or film a work permanently located on a square, in a street, in a park, on a public route or in any other public place; copyright shall likewise not be infringed by anybody who further uses a work so expressed, rendered or recorded. If possible, the name of the author (unless the work is an anonymous work) or the name of the person under whose name the work is being introduced in public, the title of the work and its location shall be indicated.
(2) The provisions of Paragraph (1) shall not apply to making a reproduction or imitation of a work of architecture in the form of erecting a building and to the reproduction and distribution of a work in the form of a three-dimensional reproduction.
See COM:CRT/Czech Republic#Freedom of panorama for more information.

You can use Template:Licensed-FOP to describe the situation. If it is a photograph that you took you chose "this file is my own work" and choose whichever free license for your photograph that you wish. You can put in the source that it is an own work, and for author, you can include both your user name and the author of the object in the photograph (if known). Abzeronow (talk) 16:10, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have long thought our (Commons') text about 'is this your work or someone else's?' could stand to be made a little clearer... I have relatedly wondered, when I use e.g. a blank shield and clipart of a lion (both hosted on Commons) to create an image of what a lion with its colours counterchanged per fess looks like, is that resulting image 'my work' or 'someone else's work'? It's both. -sche (talk) 14:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to identify the representative image for a category[edit]

I've been organizing a category of street art that has multiple images for each piece by moving them to a piece category. Is there a template I could use to identify one of the images as the representative image for each category? I'd like eventually make a gallery and that would make it easier to display the best image for the piece. Thanks Carlos Fonseca (talk) 22:28, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Carlosefonseca: it's always a bit hard to answer questions like this in the abstract, and you don't give any example. If there is a corresponding Wikidata item, you can pick what you think is the most characteristic image as the image associated (in Wikidata) with that item. Everywhere you see an image in a {{Wikidate Infobox}}, that's how it gets there. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: I've seen the Wikidata Info boxes and they are probably what I want. I will look at them for this. I haven't yet because the format still feels a bit weird but I'll get some inspiration from existing items and make something that makes sense. The category I've been organizing is Category:Street art in Lisbon. Thank you for your suggestion. Carlos Fonseca (talk) 08:00, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question[edit]

I have created a new logo for the meta:Association of Exclusionist Wikipedians. It is derived from File:Diamond Icon Transparent.png, with text in FreeSerif and modifications done in GIMP. How do I license this, since the image is CC0, but FreeSerif is GPL? Edward-Woodrow (talk) 16:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Then you need to go with GPL. (CC0 doesn't put any demands on you, but GPL does). - Jmabel ! talk 18:46, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Chart/Infographic with false information?[edit]

I cannot find anything about this anywhere, but if the infographic has both wrong and misleading information, is there a way to flag that? Not all of it wrong, but some of it sure is.

Uh, if you need to know which one it is, it’s this one. Septics (talk) 18:36, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Septics: "Wrong and misleading" can be a subjective appreciation. You could write a comment to explain your objections, using the template Template:Disputed fact in the description. It can be useful in certain rather obvious cases. Or you you can write a comment in the talk page of the file, expecially if it's complex, and optionally place a link to it in the description. But in this particular case, considering that the source is a scientific article from someone at the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, this could be a debate for experts and it could deserve more than a simple expression of disagreement. I would suggest that you first contact the author of the article and discuss that with her. There is a contact address at the end of the article. Or if the address doesn't work, it is probably possible to find how to contact her. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:04, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File tagged since Jan. 2023[edit]

This image was tagged by me as unsourced on Jan. 26, 2023. For some reason, it was included in the category "Media without a source as of 12 November 2021", that doesn't even exist. Due to this fact, the issue was not addressed by any sysop. I just found out about it, by pure chance. Can someone give it a look, please? Also, can someone tell me what did I do wrong? Thanks. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 18:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Kacamata: In the history of the page, it can be seen that the uploader later changed the date in the no source template. Apparently by mistake. That mistake on the date is not yours. However, why there is a no source tag may not be obvious for everybody. If the source is false, it may be more useful to use the copyvio tag, with a link to precise evidence of the copyvio, or to use a deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:51, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, @Asclepias Thanks for the answer. When I can find evidence that the image is indeed a copyvio, I tag it as a copyvio, but in this case, I couldn't find it, but the image is not "own work", so I tagged it as unsourced. It gives the uploader 7 days to fix the issue. Sometimes, the uploader can provide a proper source for the image. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 20:02, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading photos on Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, I supervise the wikipedia pages for writer, Høgni Mohr. I want to upload some photos that the author has sent me and these are photos that he owns. But I can't upload any of them, because when I try a text pops up that says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikipedia Commons...". How can I upload them? Lymohr (talk) 20:45, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Firstly, remember that Commons only accepts free works. This means that by sharing one's work on Wikimedia Commons, one grants anyone permission to use, copy, modify, and sell it without notifying one. So to share someone else's work, we need explicit permission from the copyright holder that this is okay. See Commons:Licensing for more information. Jonteemil (talk) 21:03, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Lymohr You could ask the author if they want to upload the pictures themselves to Commons under a suitable license. Relativity (talk) 02:09, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Lymohr: What do you mean when you say you "supervise" these pages? - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This editor appears to be making major changes to the subject's biographies. If this is a case of paid editing, editor must immediately disclose that fact and refer to the WMF Terms of Use. Doesn't matter what project. Elizium23 (talk) 06:43, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@0mtwb9gd5wx, thanks! I wouldn't be surprised if we've got some IPv4 socks hanging out as well. It's been a long time between 2018 and 2023! Elizium23 (talk) 08:45, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've opened discussions with administrators on the Danish and Faroese Wikipedias, regarding undisclosed paid editing, and we'll need to sort out what it means with these multiple accounts, though they appear to be serially created, used, and abandoned, along with a few ranges of IPv4 ranges, they have exclusively edited the BLP on those two Wikipedias.
Should Lymohr remain in good standing, and chooses to disclose Paid Editing status, they can continue to work out the copyright ownership thing, but perhaps the articles should be deleted instead, because Nudlan/Lymohr seem to be the only ones creating and editing them, so we'll need to test the notability of this subject. Elizium23 (talk) 00:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If it is paid editing, then foundation:Policy:Terms of Use#paid-contrib-disclosure applies, but there is no comparable cross-wiki rule about unpaid COI editing, and da-wiki appears to have only that and an NPOV policy, not a COI policy of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you'll kindly follow the link posted above, it's clear that Nudlan was blocked for undisclosed paid editing (UPE), then disclosed such and was unblocked. If Lymohr is under the same contract as Nudlan, or is the same person, then it's paid editing, and as you say, is a cross-wiki rule that it must be disclosed, with editors abiding by certain ground rules. Thanks. Elizium23 (talk) 01:42, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What is one to make of file name + § Licensing[edit]

File:01 Variations Serieuses Op 54 Mendelssohn Mark Gasser piano Klavier live recording 2009. permission given by pianist for free public domain.ogg states in its own file name that it is within the public domain, yet § Licensing states the file is under CC BY-SA 3.0/GFDL.

Uploads pending release[edit]

I wish to upload a photograph of Vesna Goldsworthy who has a Wikipedia article. I had the foresight to inform her that the photograph would be shared on Wikimedia and of the sharing license. She determined that the photographer agreed to the sharing license. I see that you wish him to personally submit a release. Your Interactive Release Generator states that the file may be posted by someone else, but it needs the file's URL. May I submit the file(s) pending the formal release? I am sure that the photographer does not have a Wikimedia account. Sorry this is the first time I have uploaded to Wikimedia Images.Oldsilenus (talk) 16:30, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Oldsilenus: the reason for the warning on the page is that it doesn't indicate a license. Do you know what license the owner of the image will issue? If so, please add that to the page and remove the "no license" notice. If not, turn the "no license" notice into a normal DR, which allows more time before the image would be deleted for lack of license. - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The copyright holder e-mailed the authorization earlier today. I will look again, but I couldn't find the file (on Wikimedia) on my first attempt. Please forgive me but this is my first upload. I do not wish to upload the file again, unless necessary, since this will only increase your workload. Any suggestions about locating it? I will check again, but the URL was https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VesnaGoldsworthy_creditMartinFigura_crop.jpg . I have received no notification of deletion or acceptance. I am sure that it takes you at least 24 hrs. to respond to the e-mail permission. Thanks again. Oldsilenus (talk) 18:53, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Voila! It seems to be now accepted. I assume that if I post different pixel sizes of the photo that is covered under the license, and no further authorizations are required.Oldsilenus (talk) 18:57, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Oldsilenus: there is never any reason to post different pixel sizes of the photo. Always post the highest resolution available; the software will always downsize appropriately as needed.

Form to e-mail to owner for permission[edit]

Sorry. I came across this earlier today but I am having no luck now. As stated in prior question the file File:VesnaGoldsworthy creditMartinFigura crop.jpg was added pending permission.I now need the form to verify that the permission has been obtained. The image was uploaded so that I would have a URL required by the form. Oldsilenus (talk) 02:37, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Oldsilenus: I had understood your first question as meaning that the photographer was prepared to send the permission (either with the release generator or otherwise), as soon as you inform him of the url of the uploaded file, in accordance with the procedure detailed at Commons:Volunteer Response Team#If you are NOT the copyright holder. Is that correct? If you have informed the photographer, it's now up to him to send the required permission. I had also assumed, perhaps too quickly, that you already knew which free license the photographer will use. If you do know it, you can add the corresponding license template to the file description page (for example CC-BY-SA-4.0). Anyway, if you do not know the license and if the file is deleted because it is missing the license template, it will be restored after Wikimedia receives the license permission from the photographer. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:39, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry- I found the form to send him at 12:00 AM Eastern Time. At 10:30 AM today I received word that the copyright holder e-mailed the permission to you. I have not checked if the file was deleted yet or not. I am also sorry that I had difficulty with the PP template. Oldsilenus (talk) 16:50, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

.PNG Files[edit]

I converted my .RAW image into a .JPG while when I straightened the image it required me to save in a .PNG file. Are .PNG files accepted and are they just as good as .JPG files? What is the downside for .PNG files? AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 04:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The thumb-generator at commons uses an optimization on PNGs that is better suited for graphics than photos and with JPG the other way around. In principle RAW to PNG would make a better quality than JPG could. But as long as no solution for thumbs has been created at commons, thumbs of photos will look better on MW sites, if they use JPG. However you could convert your RAW images to PNG, make adjustments and than convert to lossless webp (importent: chose the lossless option in cwebp.exe) for upload. You would circumvent commons restrictions and publish a photo in best possible quality. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) ([[User talk:|talk]]) 09:01, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • C.Suthorn - I have saved an image directly from a .RAW file into a .PNG file. While looking at the details of the .PNG file that saving it as that has removed ALL the details of that image. Deleting the information when it was taken, along with deleting Camera Model, GPS details etc. The only change to the file was that it was slightly off-straight. The file size is 40.6 MB. Am I doing something wrong here for all the detail information of that file to go missing when saving as a .PNG? AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 23:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @AdamDaleyAUS: PNG format doesn't keep EXIF data. That's why it is better to use the JPEG format for pictures. Also Mediawiki improves sharpness of JPEG files. Yann (talk) 23:32, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Afaik, PNG can preserve EXIF information, but it may depend on the software used --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 13:12, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann, @PantheraLeo1359531 all image formats that are actually used in the real world (and in Commons) allow MetaData. AFAIK all support EXIF, and probably all IPTC too. webp may not support XMP. webp does not support thumb images. JPEG only supports thumb images in jpeg. There are difference which format supports which subset of MetaData. Commons does show only a subset of the MetaData of the image and it differs by format. Commons does (at present) not show any metadata for webp. And it only shows the encoder version for webm. Commons will not show the f-number for a PNG, even if it is in the metadata. You can still retrieve all metadata from the API. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:32, 13 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Yann - I'll try to do some research. I'll come back if I have more questions as I already do. I need to go out to do something and I'll come back to it this afternoon. I'm getting a little confused here. AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 23:35, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Yann; C.Suthorn - I have saved an image from .RAW to .JPG. The only editing that I've done is the default shadows value in PhotoShop v24.7 at 35%. If I attempt to slightly straighten the image it will ask me to save the image in other formats not including .JPG. I do not know why it won't let me save in .JPG after a slight straightening. AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 01:22, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I do not know, why you transcode from RAW to JPG (a format for publishing finished fotoes). Especially as AFAIK Photoshop can import RAW (otherwise you could transcode from RAW to TIFF, PNG or lossless WEBP). Photoshop is a commercial software, you may have more luck with questions about Photoshop at a forum for commercial software. Instead of Photoshop you can use Gimp. But I do assume (and it is only an assumption) that Photoshop can only save to the Photoshop format and if your finished photo needs to be another format, you cannot save it, but need to export it to a format for finished fotos (for example jpeg, but other formats may be a better choice). Uploaded image appearing broken[edit]

Hi there, I'm trying to upload an image (File:Ada_Health_Symptom_Checker_conceptual_overview.png) which is a piece of work I made and then published at a medical journal that uses Creative Commons licensing (https://humanfactors.jmir.org/2020/3/e19713/). It looks like it uploaded correctly but when I try to use on Wikipedia I get a broken image icon instead of a thumbnail. However if I click on the filename it displays properly, and I can download it and it looks just fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

JMIR Footer: This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work, first published in JMIR Human Factors, is properly cited. PaulWicks (talk) 14:49, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, Clicking some of the thumbnails gives the Wikimedia servers error messge: "Error: 429, Too Many Requests at Thu, 10 Aug 2023...". It may be a temporary problem. You can probably wait to see if it gets fixed later today. However, in the meantime, please fix the description page by crediting the real authors and source and using the same license as the source. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:05, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks - I will check again tomorrow. I added the other authors (I'm one of them) and license info to the Summary. PaulWicks (talk) 15:18, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@PaulWicks: I had missed the fact that your Wikimedia username is identical to the name of one of the authors of the article, which explains your "own work" statement. In theory, as the author, you can use different licences at different places. But it can be confusing. On the JMIRHF copy, you used a license "BY". On the Commons copy, you used a license "BY-SA". -- Asclepias (talk) 16:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That was an oops on my part, now rectified. I'm still getting a broken thumbnail however (replicated on multiple browsers). Can you (or anyone else?) let me know if I've done something wrong or whether the file needs adjusting in some way? Thanks! PaulWicks (talk) 07:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I left a note at Commons:Village pump/Technical#File:Ada Health Symptom Checker conceptual overview.png pointing here. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:05, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The thumbnails are still broken, as far as I can tell, and there has been no reply yet at C:VP/Technical. At this point, maybe someone can just reupload the file and see if that works. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:58, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Transfer from Geograph[edit]

I've been trying to use https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ to transfer an image (cc-by-sa) from Geograph nothing happens and looking at the archives I see this tool hasn't worked for some years. Can it be taken down to stop others wasting their time and is there an alternative? Shantavira (talk) 15:12, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Shantavira: That seems like an old problem with no answer on meta. Perhaps you can try asking at Commons:Village pump/Technical. (Pinging Multichill, who might have suggestions.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:25, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias and Shantavira: https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ is maintained by User:Magnus Manske, not by me. Try contacting him. Multichill (talk) 08:17, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shantavira: A good alternative is to follow the "reuse" or "Licensing" link from the photo page on Geograph, scroll to the bottom, and click "directly upload this image to Wikimedia Commons". This will automatically fill in Special:Upload with the same details that geograph2commons would have used, but also allow you to choose the filename, add categories, and make any required changes to the description. If there are any remaining places (on Commons or elsewhere) that recommend geograph2commons, those should be removed. The Toolforge Abandoned Tool policy seems like it should allow anyone to take over the tool and replace it with an explanation of the new mechanism. Maybe I should try that. --bjh21 (talk) 16:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shantavira: Note that I've assumed that by "Geograph" you mean "Geograph Britain and Ireland". I don't know if any other Geograph sites have incorporated my changes to the "reuse" page. --bjh21 (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My fathers house (Erwin Friedrich Baumann (1890-1980)[edit]

After the deathe of my father in 1980 I inherited his estate. I would like to include in his Wikipedia article a fotograph of his house which he acquiered in 1938. How can I do that? HF Baumann (talk) 17:31, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Convenience link: en:Erwin Friedrich Baumann
  • @HF Baumann: assuming the house still exists, the simplest thing would be to photograph it yourself and upload that. Or are you talking about a specific old photo of the house? If so, was he the photographer? If so, and if you inherited his intellectual property rights, you can use an "heirs" license" such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. Similarly for anything else where you inherited intellectual property rights.
  • 1938 photos are typically (though not universally) still in copyright. If the photographer was alive in 1953, then it is still copyrighted. So:
    • If you know who the photographer was, and they died in 1953 or later:
      • Only the heir to their intellectual property can grant a license.
        • If you know who that is, you can approach them and ask them to go through the COM:VRT process to grant permission.
        • If you don't know who that is you are out of luck.
    • If you know who the photographer was, and they died in 1952 or earlier:
      • The photograph is in the public domain, and you or anyone may upload it. Use {{PD-old-70}} in lieu of a license.
    • If you don't know who the photographer was, you are out of luck.

Image review[edit]

Hi. I just made some contributions adding images primarily regarding football in Pakistan, as those articles were very incomplete, and I have uploaded plenty of images in public domain and youtube I found. It has costed me a good deal to find them, and I want the images to remain here, as I believe they are a very good addition in the wikipedia articles. Can anyone please review them, and please let me know if there are any drawbacks. I will try my best to sort it out.

Upload protected File:Flag of Kazakhstan.svg requires correction[edit]

This file is upload protected due to a history of edit warring over the colors that should be used, but there is a separate problem: at some point during edit warring, the eye of the eagle got broken - the pupil is no longer visibly distinct from the rest of the eye due to incorrect (gold) color applied to its outline instead of turquoise. Compare against older versions of the file from before 2022 (quite high zoom required). Can someone with the necessary permissions please fix? The stroke color of the circle at cx="1019.8" cy="720.507" should be #00abc2 rather than #ffec2d. Thanks! - 2406:3003:2077:1E60:E1DD:1E85:92A6:C507 20:44, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading old photo[edit]

I found an old photo in the archive of a library and heritage center [1] I requested access to the image, they had me fill out a form, and then they sent me the image. I told them I intended to use it on Wikipedia and asked what license the image was under. They said there was no license and that they would like me to simply indicate that the image came from the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage center. Can I upload the file? It looks like it's about 100 years old, but the upload instructions specify that an image should be 150 years old. The instructions also indicate that there should be explicit permission. How would I prove that I have permission? TipsyElephant (talk) 01:04, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @TipsyElephant: It's going to be on the borderline for U.S., where photos published before 1928 are public domain, but many photos published in 1928 or later are not. By its nature, something like this would almost certainly have been taken for purposes of publication (even distribution of copies to the members of the band would have constituted publication), so we can assume it was published very shortly after it was taken. Still, to use {{PD-US-expired}} you'd have to know for sure it was from 1927 or earlier. Odd that they have no info about source or date. In the online version, I can't read what is on the photo at lower left. Does it effectively give date information? Failing that, can you research during what years this group might have existed?
  • If it's from 1928 or later, there are still some possibilities, but it gets more complicated (if you want to see how complicated, see Commons:Hirtle chart). Short version: under the laws of the time, copyright wasn't automatic, and there is a fair chance this was never copyrighted, and a near-certainty that its copyright would not have been renewed after 28 years (again, no longer a requirement, but it was then), so one or another way we can probably accept it, but pre-1928 would be by far the simplest case. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Jmabel: it's not the most reliable source ever, but this source indicates the picture was taken in 1925. I could ask the librarian if they have any more information on the picture if that would help. If it was taken in 1925, is it okay for me to upload it? I saw mention here on the help desk about emailing Wikimedia with evidence of being provided permission. Is that an additional step that I should take. I started a Wikipedia article draft here, and to be transparent I do have a COI (I know someone in the band). TipsyElephant (talk) 02:34, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • The text at the bottom left of the picture says "I.M. Moll" and below that "Red Hill, PA". I'm assuming that's either the name of the person who took the photo or the name of the building in the picture. I could look into that and see what I can find. TipsyElephant (talk) 02:39, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Yes, 1925 would definitely do. No need to bother the VRT people with this. Just date it as {{1925}}, cite the PDF you just linked in the description as giving that 1925 date, and use {{PD-US-expired}} in lieu of a license. I'm not sure whether you can do this all with the Upload Wizard (I never use it, I use Special:Upload but that is difficult for most beginners), but come as close as you can and then edit the file page to get it right. If you want it checked after you think you are finished, feel free to post back here with a link to the new file page, someone can check your work. - Jmabel ! talk 02:41, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I. M. Moll was a photographer, according to this obituary dated January 10, 1934 [2]. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:49, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel and Asclepias: I was able to upload the photo using the Wizard (File:Red Hill Band 1925.tif), but I wasn't sure how to cite the source. Can I use the standard citation templates that are used on Wikipedia? If I do, do I need a reflist template at the bottom of the page? I also wasn't sure whether or not I should link the obituary for I.M. Moll. TipsyElephant (talk) 14:10, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The source of the large image is directly the Library and Heritage Center, not the webpage, but the link to the webpage can also be there as additional information. There's no need of complicated things like a reflist template. The obituary is not necessary either, although it may be added optionally for information. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel and Asclepias: thank you both for all of the help. I have a few remaining questions if you are willing. I have included the location of the picture. At first I thought the image was taken at "113 Main St, Red Hill, PA 18076" because multiple sources indicate that the band first practiced at the L.B. Miller cigar factory across the street from the Red Hill post office. However, I just went to the library today and found "Montgomery County, The Second Hundred Years. Vol. 1" which indicates that the band had a rehearsal hall built in 1924 on the corner of Eighth and Main. It doesn't specify which corner and based on the sources I've found the building was later converted into a clothing factory and then burned down in 1931. There's a very old building at "800 Main St, Red Hill, PA 18076" that looks like it could have been the clothing factory if any part of it had been salvaged after the fire. However, the front of the building doesn't match the photograph. If I include the Latitude and Longitude of this building as the location of where the picture was taken is that considered original research? Should I remove the location or should I cite the book I found? TipsyElephant (talk) 16:45, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TipsyElephant: Just state as accurately as you can what you know, where you know it from, and what you are not sure of. This is a media repository, and has different standards than an encyclopedia. - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you want, you can write some text in the description field to describe your observations. Just be careful not to state speculations as if they were factual certainties. If the location is not certain, it's probably better to remove the coordinates. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:16, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Look if the books include a copyright notice either for the whole books or for the photos. If not, that's good, with the template "PD-US-no notice". If there's a notice, you'll have to check if the copyright was renewed. If not, that's good, with the template "PD-US-not renewed". -- Asclepias (talk) 14:44, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Specifically:
  • Commons is not Wikipedia. And there are about 200 wikipedias, each in a different language.
  • Neither Commons nor Wikipedia nor the Wikimedia Foundation owns the rights to any of the images here (there are a probably handful of exceptions for some of their own logos, etc.). The rights are owned by third parties, some of them contributors, some not. Copyrighted images are here on the basis of being licensed, and to reuse them you also have to conform to the terms of the license for each specific image, which will vary from image to image, and are always stated on the respective file page. - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@V8goldcoast every media available at commons has a description page (the page here on commons you see, if you click on an image at wikipedia. Possibly you get the MediaViewer first, in that case click von "details"). This description page explains the conditions you have to meet to use the media. In many cases the image is in the public domain (because of old age or being a work of the US government, etc). In such case you do not need to attribute it at all, but as Jmabel explained you must not attribute it to wikipedia or commons. Commons is the source only. In other cases the media is not in the public domain. Then you must make a correct attriution as explained on the individual description page. Ca. 40 million images come with a creative commons license. In that case yout have to follow the conditions of the chosen license (for example cc-by-2.5 or cc-by-sa-4.0). Other image may come with an art libre or beer license (you are free to donate a beer to the author in that case). In any other case, I would simply request the file for deletion in the awake of a sudden email saying that Jackson wouldn't like it to have a CC license, but I am following the instruction(s): Once you have received a written/e-mail confirmation granting permission you should:
1. If the material is not already on Commons or Wikipedia: Upload relevant images, sound recordings or videos to Commons. If you don't have a Commons account, see Commons:First steps for more help. If for text, upload to Wikipedia. (see here)
It is saying if the material is not already uploaded, to upload such image. Yet one may say, "once you receive confirmation", but it says "if it is not already uploaded". I find this an ambiguous term, considering the notions that it can be uploaded prior to the confirmation, or after.
Anyways, I am not too worried about this because I am going on vacation tomorrow and there is a chance that Jackson may not grant the appropriate copyright. Nevertheless, I would like an administrator to remove such templates of deletion in preparation for if Jackson grants permission and copyright status.
That is all,
BillClinternet (talk) 22:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

BillClinternet: Because this is a Getty Images photo, I highly doubt you will be given an image release permission we accept. You don't need to worry about it being deleted before their permission arrives, because deleted images are restored once a suitable permission and copyright licence are received and they will be added at that time. Ww2censor (talk) 00:04, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How would I go about restoring it? Simply re-uploading the photo to commons or having an administrator re-store it?
Thanks,
BillClinternet (talk) 03:01, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Once the permission of the photographer arrives at VRT it will be restored. You must not upload a deleted image again. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 03:53, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How do I specify the license when I upload an improved versions of a Wikimedia commons image?[edit]

Copyrighted image requesting it to be taken down.[edit]

Hello.

While helping out at the Wikipedia Teahouse, I've come across a user that claims to have taken a professional portrait of a person and uploaded it here as Own work. The user also said in the Teahouse that they have no personal affiliations with her here. On Google, I've found the exact same image of her here. 🛧Layah50♪🛪 ( 話す? 一緒に飛ぼう!) 14:15, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can I publish a scan of a rare book written by my great-grandfather over one hundred years ago?[edit]

I have in my possession a book in Hebrew, written by my great-grandfather in 1907. It is called the Jubilee book of Rishon LeZion. it is frail, and before I scan it I would like to know if I can publish the book on Wikimedia, and what format is preferred (PDF, jpeg...) Accelerator-physicist (talk) 14:46, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Accelerator-physicist: Hi, For a book, the preferred format is usually PDF. When did your great-grandfather died? Where was the book first published? We need to know this to decide on the license. Yann (talk) 14:52, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also (may be relevant depending on the answers to the other questions): are you the heir to you great-grandfather's intellectual property? - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In addition we also need ot know your great-grandfather's citizenship and place of residence in 1907. These might also be of interest. In answer to your question "Can I publish the book on WIkimedia?", I don't think that you can publish the whole book on WIkimedia - you can publish a transcript in Wikibooks (assuming that there are no copyright restrictions). Finally, if the book is frail, I suggest that you go to a university library and ask them for advice - they will probably suggest that you get it professionally microfilmed and you can then publish it in any form you like. Martinvl (talk) 15:21, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is exceedingly unlikely that the citizenship or place of residence will matter. The book is public domain in the US, and pretty much everywhere if the author died by 1952, besides Columbia, Guatemala, and Mexico and a couple other small places; even then, if he died by 1922 it will be fine.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi folks, thanks for your help.
My Great-grandfather died in 1924, in the town of Rishon LeZion, which was then in the Palestine region of the Ottoman Empire, so he was either a citizen of that empire and/or of his native country, Poland. I guess I am heir to his intellectual property, along with (guess) about a hundred equally distant heirs, although many of these probably passed.
I will look at Wikibooks. It is not so frail that I cannot scan it to PDF, it is just that the binding will not survive the exercise, but then a digital medium is worth it. Special thanks to Prosfilaes, this answers my question - so the book is in the public domain, for me the US counts.
Much appreciated! Accelerator-physicist (talk) 23:52, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wikisource, not Wikibooks, is the place for reproducing old books; Wikibooks is for new original works. What counts for Commons is the US and its source country, but fortunately Israel is life+50, and I can't think of any country where it would still be under copyright so it is fine to upload as a public domain work.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:28, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can upload it to the Internet Archive (archive.org) and I recommend that you do, as that's one of the great Internet libraries and should preserve the copy, and probably do a better job about making it available to those looking for it than Wikimedia will. You can upload a PDF to Commons, and transcribe it on the Hebrew Wikisource.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Again, superb advice - many thanks! Accelerator-physicist (talk) 23:55, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

License to use copyrighted image in Wikimedia Commons[edit]

I have written permission from a copyright holder to use "Fauntleroy memorial plaque.jpg", which appears at https://www.cornelius-tiebout-engravings.org/part_12.html. What steps are needed to satisfy Wikimedia Commons requirements so that the image will stay there? Do I need to have the copyright holder (the archives at University of Southern Indiana) submit a digital form? Clark Kimberling (talk) 16:34, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

First, there are two potential copyrights here: the copyright of the plaque and the copyright of the photo. Are you saying that both of these things are copyrighted, and that both copyrights are held by University of Southern Indiana? And, if so, how do they come to own these copyrights? (Sorry, but before we say how permissions should be communicated, first we need to understand what rights are to be licensed by whom.) - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The plaque was erected [publihsed] in 1937, so according to the table in Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States, and unless there is a hidden copyright notice (maybe on the side of the plaque), the plaque itself is out of copyright. If this is the case, you need only worry about the copyright of photograph itself. Martinvl (talk) 20:38, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Original editable files[edit]

Greetings. Is there any guidance about how best to make available the original media files, more easily editable than the final images? For example, I have made an animation in powerpoint and am exporting an animated GIF (here's the related discussion: File talk:AngularFrequency.gif). I've tried exporting the PPTX file in SVG format, but it creates a separate file for each slide, so not so easily modifiable. Is there a recommended companion open-access repository for media formats not accepted at Wiki Commons, where I could upload the original editable file? I'm considering using figshare.com or similar sites. Thanks! Fgnievinski (talk) 22:15, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cropping a commons image to get one person for a wikipedia article[edit]

I would like to use the image of Dick Wagner in this photo https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gay_Pride_parade_1991,_Madison,_Wisconsin_(04).jpg for an article about Dick and crop out the (now Senator and Congressman) Baldwin and Pocan - is the easiest way to do this to just download the image, crop it, and reupload it to the commons as a new file and point back at the original for the "source", or is there a better way to reuse existing commons images that keeps more metadata and lineage connected? Thanks! 22:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC) Erik s paulson (talk) 22:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Erik s paulson: Use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the copped version as a separate new image and not overwrite the existing file, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 23:53, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Using unpublished (?) images[edit]

Hello. I will soon be writing a Wikipedia article on some sculptures in a local church. It would be nice to illustrate the article with some pictures of the sculptures. I'm thinking maybe I could take some pictures myself and upload those, but since the sculptures were restored circa 2005, the church might have more professional photos of the sculptures after their restoration. Assuming the church has the pictures, can I ask for permission the usual way, the same as asking for the release of copyright restrictions for an image found on a website? Thank you, Curiocurio (talk) 02:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Curiocurio: let's start out by working out whether the sculptures themselves are still copyrighted. What country is this, when do the sculptures date from, and if they are any later than 1903, do you know who sculpted them and (ideally) when that person died? - Jmabel ! talk 02:49, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If the 1949 sculptures by Woods (1919-2014), you can probably upload at least one photo to en.wikipedia as fair use. Not to Commons. The fair use being of the work of the sculptor, but the work of the photographer must be freely licensed. The permission to obtain from the photographer can be as usual. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:10, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you to both! I didn't think of fair use. Curiocurio (talk) 12:07, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Using tracings(?) of structural artwork[edit]

A bit of a niche case. I'm trying to make a page regarding the Arkville Maze, though the maze itself is private and most photos of it are either satellite/drone photography or otherwise not free access.

In a bit of desperation, I took a satellite image of the maze and traced over it in a photo editing software in order to at least convey the relative size and design of the art instillation. Is this permissible for upload? It would definitely be tough if what is essentially an art piece was unable to have any sort of visual representation attached in the article. Thanks! A MINOTAUR (talk) 03:23, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@A MINOTAUR: seems to me it's going to be a derivative work no matter what you do. Probably acceptable within the English-language Wikipedia as fair use if uploaded there for use in a specific article, but probably not acceptable for Commons. But it is a weird case, and someone else may see an angle I'm missing. You might want to take the question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is usually more expertise on this sort of thing. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading additional information and photo to the person page[edit]

Hello, I tried to upload additional information to the person page. But so far it has not been viewed. What do I have to do to get these amendments approved? I also uploaded some photos from the person's personal archive to this page, but I got a message about copyright infringement. What kind of license do I have to provide? What format should it be in? I would be very grateful for an answer! Since I am a new user of Wikipedia and it is difficult to understand the algorithm of my actions. Yuliia Gonchar (talk) 08:19, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Yuliia Gonchar: I can't make any sense of this.
  1. This isn't Wikipedia, it's Wikimedia Commons, a media repository. Run by the same foundation, but basically in most respects a separate project.
  2. No idea what you mean by "the person page", could you link?
  3. "has not been viewed": how would you know whether a page has been viewed?
  4. get these amendments approved: what are you trying to "amend"? Rules of some sort? or are you just talking about editing some article, file description, etc.? Normally such changes take effect immediately, are you saying you edited something and your edit seems not to have worked? Again, a link would be helpful.
  5. I'm guessing you tried to do a cross-wiki upload of some image from Wikipedia in some language to Commons, probably using the Upload Wizard on that Wikipedia. But maybe not. Again, without specifics, this is going to be hard to sort out.
  6. Also, if there is some language where you can express yourself more clearly than in English, please use it. There are plenty of people here who understand pretty much any language you are likely to use (including getting some help from Google Translate). The clearer and more specific you can be, the more likely someone can help you. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I want to add video but can not as the file is in MP4 after keeping it in Whatsapp on my Desktop[edit]

What I can see there are various videos on Wikimedia Commons. For example: Category:Videos of Darya Dugina. I would love add as public domain my few seconds video of Basilica Fatima day before WYD but I can not due to fact the file is in MP4 after keeping it in Whatsapp on my Desktop. Wgat can I do techically? Is this common issue? Are there any videotutorials or extremally detalic instructions how can I hange it from mp4 to something other where will be 200% guerantee to file be upload on commons successfully? Best regards Dawid2009 (talk) 10:31, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In most cases a media file taken from WhatsApp cannot be uploaded to Commons as every file at Commons needs to have a free license. Files from WhatsApp do not have such a license unless the copyright owner issues a free license in a way that can be proved through VRT. If you have a video that you made yourself (directed the lense of a video camera on the subject than pressed the record button) or that is public domain (because it was taken 150 years ago or made by the US government) than you can upload it in the webm format (and best with a VP9 encoding). If the video is any other format you need to transcode to webm (for example with ffmpeg). You can also use the video2commons tool, that will accept mp4 and mov videos, transcode to webm and upload to commons. How to add multiple categories to an image (step-by-step)[edit]

I'm sure I'm being obtuse, but I haven't the foggiest idea of how to add categories to my uploaded images.

If I look at some of my uploads, I get a message that says they need categories. But I'm not sure where to edit/insert the categories.

I also activated the "hotcat" gadget, but for the life of me, I can't find added functionality for adding categories (and I have javascript enabled). I don't see anything that looks like the screenshots shown in the hotcat tutorial. I even signed in via a different browser and still can't find hotcat functionality.

OOF.

Thanks for any guidance. Pdanese (talk) 11:00, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is a plus sign at the right of all categories at the bottom, which allows you to add a new category. Or, if you want to add multiple categories, you can use the plus/plus sign at the left. You should add categories and then save the edit. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. Pdanese (talk) 12:44, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Or you can skip hot-cat and just edit the wikitext. Look at the bottom of the wikitext of pretty much any existing, categorized photo: the syntax for categories is pretty simple, you'll probably understand it in about 10 seconds. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unsure whether I can upload an image like this[edit]

Hi. I'd like to upload an image to an article about a living person (I have previously attempted to upload two photos of them via the Upload Wizard, but eventually realised that I couldn't just freely use those specific images due to copyright rules and such), and have found an image from one of their social media accounts. It seems like a normal photo, simply one of them smiling and posing in front of a wall. However, I'm not sure if it can be accepted because it isn't known who actually took the photo. I thought that I could use it as it was shared on their own public social media account, and the date of when it was uploaded is clear, but I'm not sure if there's something else I should do/be cautious about before doing anything.

This specific article is probably the one I've contributed to the most in my not-so-long time editing on Wikipedia and for a while I felt that there was something missing (i.e an image). I have grown a little frustrated at times trying to upload a decent image, only to find out that I'm doing something wrong every single time (that's my fault though, I won't deny that).

Anyway, my point is: I would just like to know whether an image like the one I described is fine to upload, or if I should avoid uploading it all together. If it isn't fine, then I probably won't attempt to do it again.

Thanks for your help. Usernameisoccupiedtoo (talk) 20:21, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No, it cannot be used. By default, copyright is owned by the photographer. (Some countries do allow it to be reassigned, but that typically requires a written document or electronic equivalent.) Only the copyright-holder can issue a license. This is just like no one but you can give someone permission to borrow your car. - Jmabel ! talk 20:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons users[edit]

Which is the category that should contain selportraits of Commons users? Pierpao.lo (listening) 09:47, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Most user self-portraits are not in a category for example this picture is from a user with only one contribution and the name cannot be found in Wikidata. Many of these photos are for self-promotion only. For example, if I want to see Pierpao's self-portrait, I go to the user page and find nothing. Searching does not make much sense, because then you get to see all the user's contributions. If you do find a self-portrait, you still don't know what the user's real name is. There is the Category:Selfies, but it is not easy to find the info there. What exactly is the purpose of your question? Wouter (talk) 19:05, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Correcting mis-attributed & mis-licensed files[edit]

File:Victoria Park Soccer Club 1933.jpg and File:WilliamDrain.jpg were uploaded as "own work" under a CC license, which was obviously incorrect. I've located the original source and determined that the copyright has lapsed, and was able to update the summary and licensing sections accordingly. However, I couldn't change the structured data for some reason. Also, would appreciate if someone with more experience can check for anything else I might have missed. Move request for a revision[edit]

I wish to request renaming my recompressed, 135 bytes smaller but identical image File:Wikipedia_Logo_as_ASCII_Art_recompress.png to a revision of File:Wikipedia_Logo_as_ASCII_Art.png
I made the image 1-bit grayscale (inverted for better compression), then used zopflipng brute-force mode to use the filter mode it finds best for the image, compressed the raw IDAT contents further with regular zopfli (it seems to provide better zlib compression compared to zopflipng), switched the image to indexed (still 1-bit), added PLTE[(white, hidden by tRNS), black] and tRNS to make the first palette entry fully transparent like in the original. :) Mossymountain (talk) 14:14, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Zeitung33+: File:Kurapaty 1989 meeting.jpg says "Author: Valer Pałściuk" and appears to offer quite a choice of licenses. Look again; if you still don't see the licenses I can spell this out in more detail. - Jmabel ! talk 23:53, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks very much! Which license should I use ? Can you please spell it out? Sorry I am new at this - thanks again. 66.44.26.69 02:03, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Jmabel ! talk - think I failed to use your name in the above reply. As I said, I'm still getting used to this system and would welcome it if you spell out which license I should use. thanks much Zeitung33+ (talk) 02:38, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wrong authors of paintings[edit]

How can I change the author of a painting in a file edited like this? File:Hans Holbein - Terminus, the Device of Erasmus - 1971.166 - Cleveland Museum of Art.tiff The real author would be Hans Holbein the Younger as it is mentioned in the source and not Hans Holbein the Elder.

In that rather well known File:Venus and Amor, by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg of allegedly Hans Holbein the Younger the actual author would be the Venus painter (or Venusmaler in German) as it is also mentioned in the source.

How can I change this? I tried, but was not able to.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 02:16, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright question[edit]

I am unclear on the copyright status of File:ML @ Blue Note by Felicity Hall.jpg. The filename says the photographer (copyright owner) is "Felicity Hall" – a tour manager per [5] [6]. The Commons file description says the author (copyright owner) is the uploader User:RoyalEMV. There is no indication that the uploader is "Felicity Hall". The uploader's only other upload was deleted because of copyright violation, see [7] [8]. I don't have much experience on copyright, I appreciate input or advice to clarify this.
